National Poetry Month April 13

This one was inspired by Walt Whitman's poem about attending a lecture on astronomy.

When the word

beauty

has been defined completely

charted, catalogued, wasted,

used to describe such mundane fare as sunsets,

mountains and oceans, so that it has become meaningless

still you will confound the cartographers of language

with your soul,

still you will surprise those who expound

on the recognized meanings of words

simply by turning to face them.

the scientists of language will

drop their books, their defenses and expectations

at the glimmer of your eyes
